Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Quantitative Biology
The University of Queensland - School of Biological Sciences
SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
The School of Biological Sciences is recognised as one of the most successful Biology Schools (departments) in Australia, with 43 full-time academic staff, >40 postdoctoral researchers, and over 200 enrolled PhD students. The School has broad expertise across ecology and evolution, molecular and quantitative genetics, paleobiology, developmental biology, plant and animal physiology, and conservation biology. Our research programs involve a diverse array of taxa, ranging across microorganisms, animals and plants. Special opportunities for biological research and teaching are provided by our proximity to the many special marine and terrestrial subtropical systems. Research programs in the School take advantage of model and non-model organisms and many include a strong quantitative and modelling focus.
The School of Biological Sciences strives for an equitable, inclusive and family-friendly working environment. The leadership of our School is committed to supporting academic staff before, during and following parental and other carers leave, and aims to provide an academic environment that is understanding of a reasonable work-life balance.
Further information and details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the school’s web site at https://biological-sciences.uq.edu.au/
The role: We are interested in recruiting ecologists, evolutionary biologists and geneticists whose research approaches rely on high-performance computing, mathematical modelling or modern statistical analyses to ask questions about biological systems. In this job, you will contribute to our collegial and collaborative School; be centrally involved in the development and delivery of a new Masters degree program in Quantitative Biology; contribute to undergraduate teaching; and develop a successful independently funded research program.
The person: Though applicants from a wide range of biology-focused quantitative backgrounds are encouraged to apply, we are particularly interested in people holding a PhD and postdoctoral experience in quantitative ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics or applied mathematics (including statistics with a biological focus). In these jobs, you will also participate in our School’s undergraduate programs in ecology, zoology, marine biology and/or genetics and we especially encourage you to apply if you have experience working with non-model plant, animal or micro-organism systems and if you complement existing research strengths in the School of Biological Sciences: https://biological-sciences.uq.edu.au/research/research-strengths. The Quantitative Biology Masters program will have a foundation in the R statistical language and will utilize High Performance Computing facilities. Experience with R is thus essential and experience with HPC is useful but not essential. Additional experience with, or potential to teach in, terrestrial or marine field settings is desirable but not essential.
The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and actively encourages applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Please refer to the University’s Diversity and Inclusion webpage (https://staff.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/human-resources/diversity) for further information and points of contact if you require additional support.
There are two full-time positions; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
Accessibility requirements and/or adjustments can be directed to email@example.com
Remuneration: There are two full-time continuing appointments at Academic Level B or C.
The remuneration for Academic Level B will be in the range AUD$92,142 – $109,419 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be AUD$107,807 – $128,020 p.a.).
The remuneration for Academic Level C will be in the range AUD$112,874 – $130,150 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be AUD$132,063 – $152,276 p.a.).

All applicants must supply the following documents: a cover letter, a CV and names and contact details of three professional referees. Please ensure your cover letter includes the following elements: a statement on your research interests and how your research will complement/expand the School’s existing research strengths (one page; https://biological-sciences.uq.edu.au/research/research-strengths ), a short teaching statement including an explanation of how you envisage contributing to a Masters in Quantitative Biology (one page), and a clear explanation of your fit with each of the specified job selection criteria as listed in the position description. We encourage both domestic and international applicants to apply.
